Welcome Our New Assoc. Pastor

IMG_4634Our new Associate Pastor, Rus Black  officially joins us this Sunday, June 28th.

Rus was born in Statesboro, GA and raised in Sylvania, GA.  He graduated from Georgia Southern University in 1995 with a B.A. in History and Sociology and a commission in the United States Army as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Infantry.

Rus is finishing up 20 years of Active Duty service this October as a Lieutenant Colonel.  During his time on Active Duty, he has been stationed in Ft. Drum, NY; Ft Bragg, NC; Ft Stewart, GA; Ft Leavenworth, KS; and Ft Polk, LA.  He has deployed to Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan (2x), and Iraq for a total of 30 months of combat service.  Rus is a graduate of the Infantry Officer Basic Course, the Infantry Officer Advanced Course, the Combined Arms and Services Staff School, the Command and General Staff College, the Bradley Leaders Course, and he is an Officer Honor Graduate of U.S. Army Ranger School.  His awards include the Bronze Star with two Oak Leaf Clusters, the Meritorious Service Medal with two Oak leaf Clusters, the Combat Infantryman’s Badge, the Expert Infantryman’s Badge, the Master Parachutist Badge, and the Air Assault Badge.

During his 20 years of service he remained a faithful member of the South Georgia Conference and was a member of the Oak Grove UMC of Sylvania GA.  For the last two years, he served as a pulpit supply minister to Hornbeck UMC, Hornbeck, LA and is an active member of the Walk to Emmaus Community.

Rus has been accepted to Candler School of Theology at Emory University for fall 2015 in the Master of Divinity Program and is a Sherman Scholarship Awardee.

He is the son of Mr. J.W. and Dr. Charlene Black and has one daughter, Catherine, age 14.
